Decoding animal language, interpreting unfolded ancient scrolls, discovering new archeological sites?! It was a BIG year for AI in the scientific community. Beyond just these more sensational stories, AI has been having a huge impact on novel protein discovery, breakthroughs in medicine, as well as early diagnoses for everything from Alzheimer’s to breast cancer.
Even if we’re not huge fans of AI, it’s very likely that in time our health will be improved, and our lives may be extended thanks to the myriad of use cases where it’s proving to be invaluable.
Artificial intelligence has been making waves in various fields, and Katie Hunt from CNN highlights some of the most intriguing developments in her article. One standout project is the Vesuvius Challenge, where AI is being used to read ancient Herculaneum scrolls that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. These scrolls, too fragile to be unrolled, are now being decoded using AI and high-resolution X-rays, revealing passages that have been hidden for centuries. This project, led by computer scientist Brent Seales, is a testament to AI’s ability to tackle complex problems by enhancing the readability of ancient scripts.
AI’s role in science doesn’t stop there. It’s also helping researchers understand animal communication, like the mysterious clicks of sperm whales. By analyzing nearly 9,000 recorded click sequences, AI has uncovered patterns that could one day allow humans to communicate with these marine giants. Additionally, AI is aiding archaeologists in discovering new sites in Peru’s Nazca Desert. A team led by Masato Sakai used AI to identify 303 new geoglyphs, almost doubling the known number in just a few months.
One of the most notable AI advancements is the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, developed by Demis Hassabis and John Jumper at Google DeepMind. This tool predicts the structure of nearly all known proteins, accelerating research in biology and medicine. It’s a game-changer for scientists who previously relied on time-consuming lab experiments to understand protein structures.
Benefits
The benefits of these AI advancements are significant. For historians and archaeologists, AI opens up new avenues for understanding ancient cultures and languages. In biology, tools like AlphaFold are speeding up research and potentially leading to new medical breakthroughs. The ability to decode animal communication could deepen our understanding of marine life and ecosystems.
Concerns
However, there are challenges to consider. AI systems can sometimes replicate biases present in the data they are trained on, leading to discrimination in areas like hiring and policing. Additionally, the “black-box” nature of some AI tools can limit the reproducibility of research findings, a concern raised by the UK’s Royal Society.
Possible Business Use Cases
- Develop an AI-powered platform for translating ancient texts, making historical documents accessible to researchers and the public.
- Create a marine communication app that uses AI to interpret and simulate whale sounds, fostering greater understanding and conservation efforts.
- Launch a biotech startup using AI to predict protein structures for drug discovery, focusing on rare diseases with limited treatment options.
As AI continues to evolve, it presents both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, it offers powerful tools that can unlock new knowledge and drive innovation across various fields. On the other hand, it raises questions about bias, transparency, and the ethical implications of its use. As we move forward, it’s essential to strike a balance, ensuring that AI is used responsibly and effectively to benefit society as a whole.
