It’s been a big week for AI energy developments. We’ve been thinking for some time that the only way we’re going to meet the energy needs of AI, without completely throwing all previous carbon neutral goals out the window, is to leverage nuclear energy. While it still has a stigma attached to it, nuclear remains one of the most powerful sources of energy that we currently have. It won’t just have to be big power plants either, as many companies work to develop micronuclear reactors, far smaller and easier to maintain. Additionally, there’s been giant strides in how to deal with waste material, such as “digesting” it with radioactive loving fungi. Obviously WAY better than just burying it in a mountain!
The Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Middletown, Pa., known for the worst commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history, is set to reopen. This time, it will power Microsoft’s data centers, which support the company’s cloud computing and AI programs. Constellation Energy, America’s largest producer of “clean, carbon-free energy,” announced a significant power purchase agreement with Microsoft. The plant, renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, will reopen in 2028 and is expected to create around 3,400 jobs and generate over $3 billion in state and federal taxes.
How It Works
Nuclear power plants generate electricity through nuclear fission, where the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts, releasing a significant amount of energy. This energy heats water into steam, which drives turbines connected to generators. For Microsoft’s data centers, this means a consistent, carbon-free energy source that can meet the high demands of cloud computing and AI operations.

- Reliable Energy: Nuclear plants provide a stable and continuous power supply, essential for data centers that need to operate 24/7.
- Carbon-Free: Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear energy does not emit carbon dioxide, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Concerns
Despite the benefits, there are concerns about the financial burden on taxpayers for the plant’s reopening. Activists like Eric Epstein from Three Mile Island Alert question whether this is the best investment for public funds. Additionally, the plant’s history of a partial meltdown in 1979 raises safety concerns, even though the reactor involved in the accident will not be reopened.
